Peace Like a River

Peace Like a River *****
by Leif Enger
Book type: Fiction, Drama
Summary: A richly evocative novel, narrated by an asthmatic 11-year-old named Reuben Land. This is the story of Reuben's unusual family and their journey across the frozen Badlands of the Dakotas in search of his fugitive older brother. Charged with the murder of two locals who terrorized their family, Davy has fled, understanding that the scales of justice will not weigh in his favor. But Reuben, his father, Jeremiah -- a man of faith so deep he has been known to produce miracles -- and Reuben's little sister, Swede, follow closely behind the fleeing Davy.
Affecting and dynamic, Peace Like a River is at once a tragedy, a romance, and an unflagging exploration into the spirituality and magic possible in the everyday world, and in that of the world awaiting us on the other side of life. In Enger's superb debut effort, we witness a wondrous celebration of family, faith, and spirit, the likes of which we haven't seen in a long, long time -- and the birth of a classic work of literature.

My Review: This book is FABULOUS. It is superbly written. It is a wonderful story of faith and love. I like Reuben, Swede, and their dad. All are wonderfully developed, dynamic characters. This book is just amazing. I can't even describe how much I enjoyed this book. So good. Probably the best book I've read in a VERY long time. Amazing.

Thank Goodness for OTHER Creative People

For our relief society activity tonight we made little plaques displaying our ward theme of the month: Family prayer. So I decided to mix a few of the different shades of green to get a pretty color, paint my block of wood, sand it down to give it a slightly antique look, and then put vinyl letters on it. I think it turned out pretty good!

The Crystal Cave

The Crystal Cave ***
by Mary Stewart
Book Type: Fantasy
Summary: Mary Stewart tells the Arthurian legend in her own way, bringing to life one of the world's greatest legends and mysteries, shedding new light on the turbulence and mystery of fifth-century Britain. This story is about Merlin in his early years.

My Review: Merlin is an interesting character and the Arthurian legend is fascinating.... But the story is a little slow for my taste. Full of a lot more detail than I like. The action is good when it's there, but there isn't a ton of it in the story. I don't think I'll end up reading any more of the books in her series... But this first book was decent.

To Kill a Mockingbird *****
Book Type: Southern Drama

The Glass Castle *****
Book Type: Memoir
Summary: Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.
Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.
What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

The Princess Bride ****1/2
Book Type: Comedy, Romance, Fantasy
Summary: Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."
Goldman frames the fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story: his father, who came from Florin, abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts he cut out.
Is The Princess Bride a critique of classics like Ivanhoe and The Three Musketeers, that smother a ripping yarn under elaborate prose? A wry look at the differences between fairy tales and real life? Or simply a funny, frenetic adventure?

Goose Girl ****1/2
Book Type: Fantasy, Fairy Tale

The story is about Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, who spends the first years of her life under her aunt's guidance learning to communicate with animals. Becoming a goose girl for the king, Ani eventually uses her own special, nearly magical powers to find her way to her true destiny. Percy is frequently attacked by monsters because he is a child of one of the "Big Three" or the three most powerful Greek gods: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. The books are filled with the suspense of solving the Oracle's mysteries and quests that start the conflict or hero quest particular to each book. Yes. I DID Make This!

One of the sister's in our ward is incredibly talented at sewing, she makes almost every one of the beautiful dresses that she wears to church on Sunday. She is amazing! So this last week she offered to teach the sisters in the ward how to make our own dresses or skirts without using a pattern. So I decided how I wanted to make my skirt and we just started making it. No pattern, no plan... We just designed it as we went and it turned out SO cute. I love it. I want to make more now that I see they can turn out adorable! :)
We pleated the top and sewed in an under layer so it's not see-through. It really was easy to make - except the zipper... But I let Paulina do that! It would be too complicated to explain it on here... But let's see what I can do... first we measured how big it needed to be to fit me comfortably... Using a skirt that fir comfortably to determine sizing. Then we decided how many pleats I wanted and measured the space in between to make them evenly spaced. Then I decided how wide I wanted the bottom and cut out the fabric and sewed everything together. Yay!

The Hourglass Door Trilogy

The Hourglass Door ****
by Lisa Mangum
Book Type: YA, Fantasy, Romance
Summary:  His past. Her future. Can love bring them together in time?
Abby's senior year of high school is textbook perfect: She has a handsome and attentive boyfriend, good friends, good grades, and plans to attend college next year. But when she meets Dante Alexander, a foreign-exchange student from Italy, her life suddenly takes a different turn. He's mysterious, and interesting, and unlike anyone she's ever met before. Abby can't deny the growing attraction she feels for him. Nor can she deny the unusual things that seem to happen when Dante is around. Time behaves differently when they are together - traveling too fast or too slow or sometimes seeming to stop altogether. When the band Zero Hour performs at the local hangout, Abby realizes that there's something dangerous about the lead singer, Zo, and his band mates, Tony and V. Oddly, the three of them are also from Italy and have a strange relationship to Dante. They also hold a bizarre influence over their audience when performing. And Abby's best friend, Valerie, is caught in their snare. Dante tells Abby the truth of his past: he once worked for Leonardo Da Vinci, helping to design and build a time machine. When Dante was falsely implicated as a traitor to his country, he was sent through the machine more than five hundred years into the future as punishment. As the past and the present collide, Abby learns that she holds a special power over the flow of time itself. She and Dante must stop Zo from opening the time machine's door and endangering everyone's future. More than one life is at stake and Abby's choice could change everything.

My Review:  Interesting. The concept of time traveling and the effects on the traveler are very interesting in this book. The characters struggle with what is right and what is wrong. What is easy and what is hard. I thought this book was unique (I don't know if it really is or if I have just never read a book like it...) But the concept of time travel was new and interesting, I liked the characters, I liked the internal struggles... I really liked that the two boys in story aren't perfect and they are complete opposites of each other. You don't wonder which boy is better for Abby or which one she'll pick, you know! And that's kind of fun. :) Not much dating drama! Just a bit at the beginning of the story. Overall I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see how the story ends!

My Review:  I liked this one as much as the first. engaging, interesting, dramatic... It is very interesting to see the story develop and grow in this book. The main character is pushed to the breaking point when everyone and everything in her life is changed dramatically by Zo. He is trying to tear her down so that she will give in and help him. Abby is so brave and strong fighting against time itself as it constantly changes around her. I look forward to seeing how Abby is able to save the world! Which I'm sure she will! :) And I'm curious to find out if she will be able to get back everything that Zo has destroyed.

The Forgotten Locket *** 1/2

The final book in the riveting Hourglass Door trilogy begins when Abby steps through the black door, and she doesn't dare look back. In the end, Abby must face a final confrontation that will take her to the very origins of the hourglass door.

My Review: The series ended happily ever after. Of COURSE it did! All young adult novels do! But the story was fairly exciting. There was more action than the first two. Just as much drama... Too much for my taste. Why are there so many young adult novels that have two or more guys in love with the same girl? I don't understand why that is! Anyway, Abby is able to go into the past and fix everything that Zo did. She lets Dante see her and his knees go weak, Dante's brother Orlando falls in love with Abby because she is SO incredible! Zo is destroyed and everything is better. The end of the world is right there within their grasp, but Abby saves the day! As you know she will. I finished the story, but barely. The first two books were better than this one. The ending was a little too sappy. The drama a little too... well, dramatic. But the suspense was good. So, if you're looking for a love story full of drama and excitement, you'll like this book!

Harry Potter 7.2

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2  ****
Trailers
Wow, I have such mixed feelings about this film. It is really hard for me to even give it a rating. The last Harry Potter movie... The last Harry Potter anything! I hate that it's all over. I don't even know what to do with myself now that it is! Buh. Anyway, I thought that this movie was well done. Parts of it were FANTASTIC, other parts were just okay, and there was maybe one scene that I didn't really like. Overall, I would say that it was a great ending to the most incredible experience... J.K. Rowling is a complete genius! As well done as this movie was, I think I liked the first half better. I felt that the end scene with Voldemort and the snake was drawn out and anti-climatic. Also they didn't fight in front of everyone so no one was there to see why or how Harry won the battle. What Harry did with the Elder wand was lame... You didn't really feel emotional when Fred died because it was more of a side-note, the main characters weren't even there when he died. BUT outside of that, Gringotts was freaking awesome, Snape's memories were emotional and spot-on, Bellatrix was hilarious when she was Hermione, and the battle scenes were filmed really well. In the end I would say the pros outweighed the cons. I will still want to own the movie and will probably watch it several times right after I get it. But, don't go in expecting the perfect ending. Expect a great ending instead and I don't think you'll be disappointed. :)
If you ever try one of our recipes we would love to hear your feedback! Let us know if you like them or if you make any changes! We love comments! :)
