The Bean Trees

The Bean Trees ***
by Barbara Kingsolver
Book Type: Realistic Fiction
Summary: Clear-eyed and spirited, Taylor Greer grew up poor in rural Kentucky with the goals of avoiding pregnancy and getting away. But when she heads west with high hopes and a barely functional car, she meets the human condition head-on. By the time Taylor arrives in Tucson, Arizona, she has acquired a completely unexpected child, a three-year-old American Indian girl named Turtle, and must somehow come to terms with both motherhood and the necessity for putting down roots. Hers is a story about love and friendship, abandonment and belonging, and the discovery of surprising resources in apparently empty places.

My Review: I thought this was an interesting book. The story was unlike any other I've ever read. It was very heart felt and real. I enjoyed that it took place here in Tucson. The main character (Taylor) is interesting. I didn't really know what to make of her at first but by the end she has grown up a lot and I really liked her. She basically has this little Indian baby dropped in her lap with no warning, no explanation, and no expectations. She finds that this little girl has been severely beaten in her short life and decides to go ahead and keep her. Raise her. Give her a home. In time Taylor grows to truly love this little girl and it terrified of being a bad mother. It is a story about life and growing up. It is about taking the lemons life gives you and making some dang good lemonade. It is about fate and a free-spirit. It is about love. It was a good story. Simple but sweet. In the end I enjoyed it very much. It's not dramatic or full of adventure, it is just life.
