The Looking Glass Wars

The Looking Glass Wars ***1/2
by Frank Beddor
Book Type: Young Adult, Fantasy, Novel
Summary: The Myth: Alice was an ordinary girl who stepped through the looking glass and entered a fairy-tale world invented by Lewis Carroll in his famous storybook. The Truth: Wonderland is real. To escape Redd, Alyss and her bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, must flee to our world through the Pool of Tears. But in the pool Alyss and Hatter are separated. Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Yet he gets the story all wrong. Hatter Madigan knows the truth only too well, and he is searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland so she may battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

My Review: Alice, I'm sorry "Alyss" is actually from Wonderland? In fact she is the princess of Wonderland. The story that Lewis Carroll wrote is an absolutely ridiculous twist on Alyss's true story? Interesting idea. Since I wasn't a HUGE fan of Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland, I wasn't too disturbed by the idea of tearing apart someone else's story. The concept is fun. The story starts out exciting but after about 30 pages it comes to an almost complete stop. Not much happens for the next 100 pages. Then everything turns around and the story becomes action-packed and exciting once more! It took Russ and I a little while to read the story because of the lull in the middle. But once it picked up again we really enjoyed the story that was being told. In one sitting we would read way more chapters than we had time to be reading. I was not a HUGE fan of Beddor's writing style. It was kind of choppy at times and his verbiage became slightly mulled and confusing at times. Maybe it was because we read it out loud and my mind would wander for a second but I occasionally had to re-read a sentence or two to get back on track. Aside from this I did think the book had a fun, exciting plot that kept you interested in the war between Alyss and Redd.
